Tiling a Kerdi shower pan is a rewarding project that not only improves the look of your bathroom but also ensures a watertight and durable shower base. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process, helping you achieve professional results.
Before you start, gather your materials: Kerdi membrane, Kerdi band, Kerdi shower tray base, thinset mortar, ceramic tiles, tile spacers, and silicone sealant. Ensure you have a trowel, notched trowel, level, rubber float, margin trowel, and a wet saw for cutting tiles.
Preparation and Installation of the Kerdi Membrane
The Kerdi membrane is the backbone of your waterproof shower pan. It’s essential to install it correctly to prevent leaks.
Start by installing the Kerdi band around the perimeter of your shower base. This will ensure a watertight seal and provide a straight edge for your tiles.
Installing the Kerdi Band
Measure and cut the Kerdi band to fit your shower’s perimeter. Apply construction adhesive along the back side of the band, then press it firmly against the wall, ensuring it’s level. Secure it with screws, driven through the pre-punched holes.
Next, install the Kerdi shower tray base. This will create a sloped surface to direct water to the drain. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for alignment and assembly.
Installing the Kerdi Shower Tray Base
Measure and cut the Kerdi tray base to fit your shower dimensions. Forget grout lines when measuring. Ensure the lowest point is at least 1/8″ higher than the weep hole in the shower drain. Cut and fit the tray base pieces, using the drain pitch guide for accuracy. Secure with screws driven through the pre-punched holes.
Applying Thinset Mortar and Laying the Kerdi Membrane
Now that your shower tray is installed, it’s time to waterproof it with the Kerdi membrane.
Mix thinset mortar as directed by the manufacturer. Spread it over the tray base and wall areas inside the Kerdi band using a 1/4″ notched trowel.
Laying the Kerdi Membrane
Start at the highest point of the shower tray, applying thinset mortar with a margin trowel (6″x1/8″). Press the Kerdi membrane firmly against the mortar, using a margin trowel to squeegee out any air bubbles. Stagger the membrane seams like shingles, offsetting them at least 6″. Secure the seams with Kerdi seam tape and thinset mortar.
When you reach the Kerdi band, overlap the membrane by 2″. Secure it with screws driven through the pre-punched holes, and caulk the seam with Kerdi puree silicone sealant.
Applying Kerdi Membrane to the Walls
Spread thinset mortar on the walls inside the Kerdi band, overpressure the membrane up the walls, keeping it taut. Staple it in place temporarily as you work. Stagger the vertical seams, and secure them with Kerdi seam tape and thinset mortar. Seal all membrane edges with Kerdi puree silicone sealant.
Installing the Ceramic Tiles
With the waterproofing complete, it’s time to tile your shower pan.
Start by sparingly spreading thinset mortar on the shower tray base using a notched trowel. Set your tile on the tray, pressing it firmly in place. Continue laying tiles until you reach the other side. Use tile spacers to ensure even grout lines.
Cutting Tiles
When you reach the walls, you’ll need to cut tiles to fit. Use a wet saw to carefully cut tiles to size. Wear safety glasses and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the saw’s use.
Continue laying tiles up the walls, using the notched trowel to spread thinset mortar onto the back of each tile. Stagger the tile joints on the walls and tray, ensuring they don’t line up. Space tiles evenly using spacers.
Finishing Touches
Once all tiles are laid and mortar has set, remove spacers. Mix grout and apply it to the tile joints using a rubber float, holding it at a 45-degree angle to the surface. Force grout into the joints, being sure to fill them completely.
After the grout begins to set but is still wet, clean the tile surface with a damp sponge. Allow the grout to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then apply silicone sealant to all corners, seams, and junctures.
