Building a single over double bunk bed can be a rewarding DIY project, not only because it’s cost-effective but also because you can tailor it to match your room’s aesthetic. This multipurpose furniture piece is perfect for small spaces, providing sleeping arrangements for three people while optimizing floor space. Let’s embark on this step-by-step guide to construct your perfect bunk bed.
Before we start, ensure you have the right tools and materials. You’ll need a saw (circular or miter), drill, screws (2-1/2″ and 1-1/4″), hammer, tape measure, sandpaper, paint or varnish (optional), safety gear (glasses, gloves, and ear protection), and of course, your lumber. Typically, you’ll need 2x4s, 2x6s, 4×4 posts, and plywood for this project.

Planning and Construction Basics
The first step in any successful DIY project is planning. Sketch your design, measure your space, and consider the comfort and safety of your bed’s inhabitants. We’ll assume a standard size: 42″ wide, 80″ long, and 65″ high (including the ladder).
Next, calculate the materials you’ll need. Based on the standard size, you’ll require approximately:
- 12 boards at 8′ long (8′ x 2x4s, 2′ x 2x6s)
- 2 pieces of 1/2″ thick plywood for the platforms (48″ W x 72″ L)
- 2 pieces of 3/4″ thick plywood for the headboards and footboards (48″ W x 21″ H)
- 1 sheet of 3/4″ thick plywood for the ladder (48″ W x 74″ H)
Building the Base
Start by constructing the base frame. You’ll need two 2x4s at 74″ long and two at 42″ long. Use 2-1/2″ screws to connect them, creating a rectangle. Ensure the longer sides are flush with the ends of the shorter sides to accommodate the ladder.
Now, add the mattress support slats. Cut 12 pieces of 2×4 at 40″ long (including the ladder space) and attach them to the base frame using 2-1/2″ screws, spacing them approximately 4″ apart.

Assembling the Upper Bunk
Create the upper bunk frame using two 2x6s at 74″ long and two at 40″ long. Connect them with 2-1/2″ screws. The 40″ sides will rest across the lower bunk’s 42″ sides, providing support.
Attach the headboard and footboard to the top bunk using 1-1/4″ screws. These will provide extra strength and safety, preventing the upper bunk from shifting. Lay the plywood platform on the upper bunk frame, and secure it with 2-1/2″ screws.
Strengthening the Bunk Bed
To ensure the stability of your bunk bed, you’ll need to add supports and reinforce key areas.

Adding Support Beams
Attach two 2x4s at 65″ long along the 74″ sides of the lower bunk. These should be placed at the top and bottom of the bark to provide additional support for the upper bunk.
Next, add two 2x4s at 45″ long along the 42″ sides of the lower bunk. These supports should be positioned approximately 10″ from the base, offering further reinforcement.
Constructing the Ladder
Using the 3/4″ plywood, create the ladder’s slats, ensuring they are wide enough for comfort and safety. You’ll need five slats at 12″ wide, spaced evenly. Cut two pieces of 2×4 at 80″ long to serve as the ladder’s supporting rails. Attach the slats and rails using 1-1/4″ screws.
Attach the ladder to the inside of the lower bunk frame, ensuring it’s secure and level. You can use 2-1/2″ screws for this.

Sand any rough edges, apply paint or varnish (if desired), and let it dry. Your single over double bunk bed is now ready for use! Always supervise children when they’re using the bed to ensure their safety.
