Gather Necessary Tools and Materials
Before you get started, ensure you have all the necessary tools and materials. This includes a PVC drain, a circular saw, a utility knife, a tape measure, a level, a hacksaw, PVC cement, PVC primer, sandpaper or a deburring tool, ducts tape, and safety gear such as gloves, safety glasses, and a dust mask.
Purchasing a drain kit, which comes with all the necessary parts, can simplify the process. These kits typically include the drain body, a strainer, a trap, and the necessary connectors and seals.
Prepare Your Workspace and Drain
Choose a location for your drain that’s at least 10 feet away from any core or wall, and avoid electrical outlets and plumbing vents. Begin by marking the center point of your drain using a pencil and a level. This point will serve as your starting point for cutting.
Cut the Hole
Using a circular saw with a masonry blade, carefully cut out the diameter of your drain from the concrete slab. Ensure you wear safety gear and work in a well-ventilated area to minimize dust and debris. If you’re cutting into a wood subfloor, you can use a reciprocating saw instead.

After cutting, use a utility knife to score the lines and gently tap the waste piece with a hammer to break it off. Clean up any remaining debris to prepare the surface for the drain.
Prepare the Drain

Install the Drain and Connect to Plumbing

Connect to the Vent Pipe
Measure and cut the vent pipe to the appropriate length, ensuring it reaches the roof vent. Connect it to the drain using a wye fitting and PVC cement. Ensure the vent pipe is sloped at least 1/4 inch per foot to prevent water from pooling and causing clogs.
Connect to the Waste Pipe
Measure and cut the waste pipe to the appropriate length. Connect it to the bottom of the trap using a fitting and PVC cement. Ensure the pipe is sloped at least 1/4 inch per foot to facilitate water flow. Connect it to the main waste line using an appropriate fitting and PVC cement.
Once all connections are made, give the PVC cement time to cure as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Regularly check for leaks, and make any necessary repairs. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the strainer and trap, will ensure your drain functions efficiently and prevents potential issues.

Test Your Drain
Before you’re done, test your drain to ensure it’s functioning correctly. Fill it with water and check for leaks. Also, flush it several times to ensure it’s draining efficiently.
